About

Under Ideal Conditions is about the household machines that move air, water or power: dehumidifiers, air compressors, pressure washers, portable power stations, air purifiers, vacuums and solar panels. Each is sold on a number. Pints per day, CFM, PSI, watt-hours, CADR. Each of those numbers was measured under conditions that are not yours.

The name is the point. A headline spec is what the machine does under ideal conditions. This site is about what that tells you, and what it does not, for the room, the job or the outage you are actually buying for.

We do not test products. We read what the manufacturer published, the standard the number was measured under, and the regulations that govern it, and we explain how to use that to decide. Method explains how, and Disclosure explains how the site is paid for.

Why there are no bylines

No article here carries a person's name. Under Ideal Conditions signs its work as a publication, and the publication stands behind every article. The evidence for each claim is on the page, linked to the document it came from, so you can check it without having to trust anyone.
