Bedsure Electric Blanket

Check the model number on your label against the recall list: Bedsure's maker, Bedshe International, recalled about 350,000 units of heating blankets and pads in March 2023 because the controller can malfunction. If your model matches, stop using it and claim the refund; if it doesn't, the recall doesn't cover it.

Bedsure Heated Blanket Recall

Yes, the recall is real, and the hazard was fire and thermal burns. It was announced on March 9, 2023, for units sold on Amazon and BedsureHome.com from August to November 2022.

The firm reported 137 incidents of fire, burning, melting and overheating, and 17 burn injuries, including one second-degree burn. Read your label before you plug the blanket in again.

If the label has worn off, you can't confirm the model. Leave it unplugged and call 855-888-9966, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday to Friday. Throw out any blanket, recalled or not, with worn areas, loose plugs, cracked wires or charred spots.

Match what you see to a branch:

  • Your label shows BS-HB5060, BS-HB6284, BS-HB7284 or BS-LV0A on a blanket, or BS-HP2422, BS-HP1224 or BS-HP2433 on a pad. Stop using it and claim the full refund: keep the unit, take photos and submit them at safety.bedsurehome.com, or write to safety@bedsurehome.com. To replace it, get the Brookstone Cozy Heated Plush Throw, our pick for the best heated throw for winter: four heat settings, a 4-hour auto shut-off and ETL certification. It's machine washable and dryer safe by its care label.
  • Your label shows a different model and the blanket looks intact. Nothing to claim: keep using it by the rules in the next section, and throw it out if it shows the wear described above.

You have a pacemaker, or you may not feel heat well

Two sources differ on pacemakers. Boston Scientific lists electric blankets as safe for use with a pacemaker when they're in good working condition and used as intended, and gives no distance. The British Heart Foundation gives a recommended distance of 15cm (6 inches) from the pacemaker.

Ask your doctor or cardiologist, and the maker of your device, before you pick any blanket.

Sunbeam's manual lists a diabetic and anyone insensitive to heat among people who should not use heated blankets. That's the maker's warning. Whether it applies to you is for your doctor to say.

Bedsure Electric Blanket Manual

Use and wash the blanket you keep by the manual and care label that came with it.

How do I use an electric blanket?

Lay it flat. The Home & Comfort manual calls for no folds or creases and no pinched, twisted or crossed cord. HEMA says never use the blanket folded, creased or tucked in. Folding a blanket in use can damage the internal wires, so roll it for storage.

Keep the control unit uncovered, and put no laundry or pillows on a blanket that's switched on. Don't run it alongside another heating device.

To preheat, Home & Comfort says set level 3 for 30 minutes, then reduce. HEMA says set H for 30 to 60 minutes, then choose a setting by body feel. Switch off and unplug after use. Falling asleep on a bunched-up area is a common cause of burns.

Don't repair the wires yourself; contact the maker.

Is it safe to sleep with an electric blanket on all night?

The sources differ, so follow the manual for your own blanket. The UL Solutions article quotes a burn director advising you to switch the blanket on about half an hour before bed and switch it off before getting in. The Home & Comfort manual says to use the lowest setting for prolonged use or while sleeping, and HEMA says L or 1.

Electrical Safety First recommends unplugging when you get into bed. If the blanket stays on overnight, it should have temperature controls, automatic shut-off and overheat protection.

Use the care label on your blanket. Labels differ by model. The GentleSoft Solid Flannel label says machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry.

Unplug and detach the control first. Sunbeam's manual says no dry cleaning or bleach, never submerge the control or cords, and don't reconnect until completely dry.

Bedsure Electric Blanket Warranty

If your blanket is on the recall list, the refund is your remedy, claimed as above. Keep the unit until the claim is done.

If you replace it with the Brookstone throw and bought it outside Brookstone.com, return it to the retailer with the receipt and check the instruction manual for any warranty claim. If you want a different blanket altogether, see the best electric blanket.
